DDOT proposes to implement safety improvements at eight high crash intersections along North Capitol Street — including North Capitol and Missouri Ave on the border of ANC 4D. These intersections were identified in a safety analysis as part of Phase I of the North Capitol Street Corridor Study. The Notice of Intent is available online here.
Safety treatments for the intersections include:
- Restricting right turn on red movements
- Restriping crosswalks and increasing crosswalk visibility
- Installing speed humps and other traffic calming measures
- Adding in pavement reflectors to increase visibility
- Restricting parking within intersections to increase visibility and slow turn movements
- Installing reflective backplates to signal heads to increase visibility
- Restriping lanes and centerlines
- Installing concrete barriers between directional lanes to reduce cross-median crashes
- Adding ‘Stop for Pedestrian’ signage at crosswalks
- Refreshing stop bars at intersections
